HOW THIS TEENAGER BEAT THE GOVERNMENT
It was secretly organized and well co-ordinated. A group of peaceful citizens known throughout France as Huguenots were to be massacred.
It was pre-arranged that in every center, when the bells rang at midnight, a group of assassins would rise up, enter the houses of the sleeping Huguenots and eliminate them in a mass slaughter.
As the killers entered her home and killed her father and mother and siblings in their beds, they somehow missed seventeen-year-old Estelle Gulliver and her two-year-old brother.
As morning broke, Estelle realised that, for her own safety, she must leave Paris as quickly as she could.
Pushing her baby brother in a cart, she spent the next few days travelling.. Sleeping under hedges or other spots considered safe, she headed for Calais on the coast. Her aim was to get to England, where Queen Elizabeth I offered asylum to fugitives fleeing from persecution.
Occasionally, sympathetic farmers and others supplied the two youngsters with food.
At Calais, small ships were plying back and forth to England.
To help in her escape, Estelle managed to acquire a load of cabbages. She said to her baby brother, "No matter what happens, do not cough, sneeze, or cry out in any way. Stay perfectly quiet. I am going to cover you over with these cabbages."
Then she headed for the wharf under the pretext of selling cabbages to the boat crews.
At the entrance to the wharf she was stopped by two guards. One waved her on, but the other said, "No. Just be sure. Thrust your spear into the cabbages."
The soldier did so. Estelle held back a gasp. Then he motioned her on.
The teenager made her way as fast as she could to the other side of the wharf building, then threw off the cabbages, expecting the worst, but praying that it hadn't happened.
To her great joy, the little boy was still alive. The sword thrust had cut a small gash on the inside of his thigh. Although this must have hurt, the youngster had not cried out. Had he done so, it would have been the end of them both.
Sympathetic boatmen were transporting fugitives across the Channel. Estelle and her brother managed to get across to England.
There, Queen Elizabeth gave many of them a place in the crypt of Canterbury Cathedral, where they became weavers for the royal household.
